Whenever I need a good pick me up, I always transport myself back to the 1950s and 60s with a light-hearted comedy starring Hollywood’s golden couple, Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Their wholesome charm paired with their magnetic chemistry is absolutely refreshing to watch. No sex, no cursing, just a feel good film that relies on a clever script and the undeniable talent of its two leading stars. Something you rarely see in film today.

We all know and love Doris Day, and how could you not? She’s the quintessential girl next door with an onscreen presence that can immediately brighten a room. In addition to being one of Hollywood’s most beloved actresses, she has one of the most beautiful voices to ever grace the silver screen. But more than that, her acting is so inherently genuine that you can relate to her emotions, no matter what role she is playing.

Day has always been one of my all-time favorites. I still remember the first time I watched her in Pillow Talk with my mom when I was about 12 years old. I was in awe of her grace, humor and fabulous wardrobe. Could she be any more perfect? In my mind, she was the epitome of class. I cannot take my eyes off the screen when she’s performing, especially when she’s acting opposite Rock Hudson.

Tall, dark and handsome. You would think the phrase was coined for Hudson, a Hollywood heartthrob who did it all—action adventures, dramas, westerns and comedies. It’s hard to believe Pillow Talk was his first venture into the comedy genre—he was such a natural. His effortless wit and charming personality plays off Day’s spot-on comedic timing beautifully.

A match made in silver-screen heaven, the pair starred in three successful films together for Universal Pictures: Pillow Talk in 1959, Lover Come Back in 1961 and Send Me No Flowers in 1964. They also became dear friends along the way.

Day once said Hudson was one of the funniest and nicest men she ever knew. Their real-life friendship translates flawlessly to the screen. You can tell they appreciated each other not only as actors, but also as people.

That kind of chemistry can’t be manufactured. You either have it or you don’t, and they certainly had it. Whether they were sharing a party line, going head to head in the advertising world or playing a married couple, their adoration for each other shimmers through their characters in all of their films, creating a dynamic connection with the audience.

I never get tired of watching any of these films, which is the beauty of Rock Hudson and Doris Day together. They can always make me laugh even when I can recite the dialogue. How many movies can you say that about? The comical confrontations and playful humor highlighted with some catchy tunes from Day all works perfectly together. And more importantly there’s always a happy ending, which is always a nice alternative reality to visit every now and then right? I think so.

You can catch Pillow Talk on TCM Monday, February 16th at 11:00 PM (ET).
