Bogie and Bacall. That’s all you have to say. They’re synonymous with the golden age of Hollywood and are revered as one of the greatest couples in film history on and off the screen.

Bacall was only 19 when she arrived in Hollywood and first met Bogart, who was 25 years her senior. This husky-voiced, sultry siren was the definition of class, with a powerful presence that could not be ignored, especially by Bogart. At this time, he was already a star with an irresistible charm that sparked Bacall’s interest. Their romance began on the set of Howard Hawk’s To Have and Have Not, Bacall’s big break, and it shows through the film. I think the camera picks up the truth. It recognizes even the slightest nuance between two people. And here, it captures the growing feelings between the two icons, overwhelmed by their electrifying connection. Their chemistry is subtle and sexy at the same time—whether it’s Bacall delivering a sexual innuendo to Bogart with “the look” or Bogart gazing at her without saying a single word, you can feel their passion for each other. Together, they created magic on the silver screen with a captivating attraction that will enthrall you with every performance. They made a total of four films together, each as great as the previous: To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo (1948). Check out their chemistry together is this memorable clip from To Have and Have Not (1944).
