She’s hailed as the Queen of Comedy. And deservedly so.

Since 1951, she’s been coming into living rooms as the scatterbrained red head perpetually scheming to get into show business. She’s lovable, hysterical and truly one of kind.

Lucille Ball is one of the most beloved icons in showbiz history, as is the character she created. And just like Lucy Ricardo, she was a female heroine. Above all her accolades as an actress, entrepreneur and entertainer, Ball was a trailblazer for women in television. She broke more boundaries and marked more milestones than any other television actress of her time.

As her 105 birthday approaches on August 6, let’s commemorate why this fierce and fabulous female will forever have our hearts.

1. She was the first woman to run a major Hollywood studio, Desilu Productions.

2. She was the first pregnant woman featured on television.

3. She fought for what she wanted. CBS approached her about turning her radio show into a television show and she refused to do it unless her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz was cast in the role of her husband. CBS didn’t think Americans would buy that Lucy was married to a Cuban.

4. She proved you’re never too old to do anything your heart desires—she was 41 when I Love Lucy premiered.

5. She appeared on TV Guide’s first cover and has been on the cover more than anyone—a total of 39 times.

6. The birth of her onscreen son Little Ricky knocked Eisenhower’s inauguration off the front page of every major news publication.

7. Her marriage was the first interracial marriage to appear on TV.

8. Together with Desi, she invented the sitcom, and she further revolutionized TV by introducing reruns.

9. She’s never been off the air since I Love Lucy premiered in 1951.

10. She has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: one for film and one for television.

11. She appeared in over 70 movies throughout her career.

12. She gave women of the 1950s a new image by always pushing gender roles and trying to break out of the domestic stereotype.

13. She wasn’t afraid to look unattractive to make people laugh.

14. She built an empire from humble beginnings—as a child, she couldn’t even afford pencils.

15. She was nominated for 14 Emmy Awards throughout her career, winning 4 for acting.

16. She was full of wisdom: “Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”

17. She was the first woman to receive the International Radio and Television Society’s Gold Medal.

18. She was strong—after 20 years of marriage, she left the man she loved because he wasn’t treating her right.

19 She never gave up on her dream. Before she hit it big as Lucy Ricardo, she was known as Queen of the B movies.

20. She was passionate. She loved what she did and would do anything for her audience.

Ball was a remarkable woman who was ahead of her time. Over the years, many actresses have tried to imitate her, but none have come close to touching her uncanny knack for comedy. And that’s yet another reason we always love Lucy.
